BCM302 FEEDBACK 2

The two beta pitches I will be reviewing are: Verity’s “I hope she knows” Instagram account and Grace’s “Wollongong women” platform.

Grace’s feedback:

https://gracegoll.wordpress.com/2020/10/18/bcm302-beta/

Grace’s project is called Wollongong Women which is a platform for local female run businesses to collaborate and connect. I think that the concept behind Wollongong women is great and you have clearly found a niche within your audience.

I think you have a clear understanding of your market and have taken this opportunity to grow on Facebook. I have seen with my own DA and on Instagram that platforms who showcase other businesses do really well and have very high levels of engagement.

I would suggest experimenting with more Instagram features such as reels or IGTV as I think it would allow you page to be seen by more people. I think that the idea to do Instagram takeovers would be a great and you could then re-purpose this content for the website or Facebook as well. I think in the long run you could also turn Wollongong women into a weekly podcast where you showcase and interview these businesses and how they came to be. Additionally, to monetise your brand you could make your blog subscription based so that people pay a fee. This could make your brand seem more exclusive and would encourage businesses to sign up so that don’t miss out and would also allow you to make a profit.  Here are some examples: https://www.uscreen.tv/blog/12-successful-subscription-sites-and-what-theyre-doing-right/

I really love your aesthetic and think it appeals to your target market very well and think that there is a really big ability for you to monetise the brand and make something big out of it.

Verity’s feedback:

https://beerwithv.wordpress.com/2020/10/22/bccm302-project-beta-i-hope-she-knows/

Verity’s digital artefact is an Instagram with the intention of communicating Women’s health issues. Firstly, I think that your beta video is so creative and aesthetic and I enjoyed watching your project develop from the pitch to now.

I agree with you that you should apply video content as it is shown to be more successful with the Instagram algorithm rather than picture posts. (https://mention.com/en/blog/video-engagement-instagram/) You could also turn your most successful Instagram posts into reels so that your audience is still engaged visually and the information is in smaller 30 second portions. Additionally, I think you have utilised the Instagram polls, questions and quiz feature on Instagram story successfully.

In order to grow your brand in the future, you could collaborate with other accounts or even medical professionals. For example, once a month you could have a female medical professional or even a strong female figure to takeover on your Instagram stories for the day or even do an Instagram live with them in order to communicate advice in real-time and your audience could ask them questions as well.

I like the colours used within your colour scheme but I think they could be used more within your Instagram in order to build a better brand image as your audience would then resonate those colours with your brand.

Overall I really love the aesthetic of your Instagram and think you have found a great niche. You have a creative ability which I think is utilised well within your Instagram.

The_Cooking_Project is my digital artefact for BCM206 this semester. I completed BCM112 and BCM114 last year however was not happy with the overall Digital artefact that I completed and lost interest very quickly, so I decided to develop a  new topic.

The_Cooking_Project, will be undertaken through the medium of Instagram, where I will film, edit and post healthy and delicious recipes, along with food photography and recipes. I feel that this will allow my Instagram to look aesthetically pleasing and be easy to navigate, when users are looking for a particular recipe.

In order to gain audience feedback, I will be posting polls and questions on my Instagram stories, which will allow me to gain insight into what my audience would be interested in seeing.

Through this DA, I hope to inspire other to cook delicious recipes and to gain a better understanding of video production and managing an Instagram account.

BCM212~ Reflective Blog Post

My research project, which explored, ‘How does sleep hinder student performance?’ through the use of quantitative data, in the form of a survey, allowed me to explore the affect that sleep can have on university student performance and in particular BCM212 students. I decided to pick a topic based on sleep because, the knowledge of sleep deprivation and the affects it has on factors such as focus and memory may not be common among individuals and therefore, I wanted to further address this through my research study.

Throughout this research project, I have developed my understanding for ethical research and it has allowed me to further develop my knowledge of research practices and quantitative data. The survey asked BCM212 students to answer 9 questions relating to sleep and their sleep habits in order for me to establish if there was a catalyst or issue that hindered performance. Within the results I found many students (18%) went to sleep later than 12am, which was surprising, however this maybe because students have working or other responsibilities which hinders the hours of sleep that they receive.

Moreover, I learnt that the use of a consent form within surveys is highly important as it conveys to individuals the use of your research and where their information and responses will be placed. The use of a consent form will allow for more ethical research and is an important factor.

If I were to conduct a research questionnaire again, I would aim to try and receive more responses as I did not believe that 11 was enough to formulate an accurate response, even though I did receive differing answers. I would also ask a few more specific questions that related more directly to the link between individual sleep patterns and their university study. I did ask one which asked, ‘Do you find that your sleep habits can have an affect on your overall performance at university?’ For this question 100% of my respondents answered yes, which conveyed to me that if I asked more questions relating to this area then maybe I would have gained more thorough answers. However, I was concerned to ask more in-depth questions as I did not want to be unethical and ask questions that may have been too personal.

Furthermore, in the future I would conduct a quantitative style of study again as I believe it allowed me to receive the most accurate responses that were formed into a percentage, which was easy to understand and comprehend.

BCM214~ Digital Artefact

BOX-IT

500 WORDS:

Throughout the semester, our group developed an idea for a device that allows individuals to send and receive items using a futuristic metal box and through the use of teleportation, it is called BOX-IT. We discovered that although postage has developed through the years and some stores now allow same-day and next day delivery, it was not able to allow individuals to receive their purchased goods instantly. As a group we explored that through the use of the shared economy, there was an opportunity for an idea to be developed that would allow individuals to be connected with one another instantly. Moreover, the teleportation element of BOX-IT would allow individuals to become more connected with family, friends and strangers from all over the world, within seconds.

The use of BOX-IT would be simple, individuals would purchase the BOX-IT online, it would then be delivered to them, they would purchase the app online and use the code found on their BOX-IT, this code would then be scanned so that their app and their BOX-IT would be connected. Individuals would then browse the array of stores on the BOX-IT app and make purchase. After the purchase was made, the item would then immediately appear within their BOX-IT through the use of teleportation.

Our project, relates to the transportation of objects, similar to postage which is how individuals currently receive items that they purchase online and send to one another. So I decided to make a Prezi to demonstrate the timeline of postage both in Australia and the world, in order to establish how BOX-IT was the next development in the mailing of items. The research behind the history of postage was more difficult then I had first anticipated, there was very limited sites that conveyed credible sources and dates, however once I gained a date and corresponding event I would then cross check with multiple other websites in order to ensure that the information was correct. Over time, I managed to arrange the main parts in history along with images and some old commercials in order to form my digital artefact. I aimed to make the presentation flow and focused on gaining aesthetic and relevant images along with credible dates and events. The Prezi is made of 32 slides, which complies 16 main slides and 16 subtopic slides. There are also 2-3 images per main slide that allows the individual to gain a wider scope into the event.

Overall, the aim of my digital artefact was to demonstrate the innovation and developments within postage and establish how BOX-IT was a necessary opportunity that would allow individuals to become part of the shared economy within society. BOX-IT will change the way that postage is undertaken and I believe will positivity impact the functioning of society. This is because it will allow individuals to send items to loved ones living overseas, or allow long distance couples to feel more connected to one another instantly, rather than having to wait days, weeks or months.

~Framing: Online Persona~ BCM112

The above Ted talk video explains the effects of social media and how this shapes our identity.

Everything you do online frames your online persona. What you post, share and tag others in are all reflections of who you are as a person. Consequently, you control how others view you online, this is because you have the power and control to alter the opinions others have of you. An example would be if someone posted something racially inappropriate on their social media platforms. Some may just bypass the post, but others may take their time to read it and once finished may have a new perception of this individuals and who they are as a person.

The article about online reputation, explains how the types of content you post online can alter peoples perception of you online. Factors such as, rants or inappropriate images are just some of the elements that may change how others see you.

My starter pack below would be how I perceive my Iphone.

~Nurse commits suicides after a Sydney radio station hoax call~ BCM113

Radio-Broadcasting.jpg

Facts of the case:

On December 4th 2012, at around 5:30am (local time), Sydney 2dayFM radio hosts, Mel Greig and Michael Christian pranked called a London hospital to gain further insight into the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton’s morning sickness condition. Nurse, Jacintha Saldhana immediately passed the call through the Middleton’s head nurse where private details of her condition were addressed, and broadcasted on air. After the call was made, Saldhana allegedly blamed herself as coroner Fiona Wilcox states that the prank was “clearly pressing on her mind.” (according to ABC News 2014)

Three days after the call was made, Jacintha Saldhana committed suicide in her hospital lodgings. The female presenter, Mel Greig voluntarily flew herself to London, to express her deep sadness and sorry to Saldhana’s husband and 2 children, saying “I am so deeply sorry for your loss. I have wanted to say this too you for so long.” (ABC news, 2014)

Michael-Christian-l-and-M-012.jpg(Radio presenters, Michael Christian and Mel Greig in their A current affair interview)

Ethical breaches:

The ethical breaches of confidentiality, deception and fakery as well as trauma and wellbeing can be detected within the case. Ethical issue of confidentiality can be found as, Ms Saldhana was unaware that the hoax call made was being broadcasted on air. Thus, she did not give consent for the call to be made or aired. This results, in a breach of confidentiality as the information disclosed to the radio hosts was private.

Deception and fakery is evident, as Ms Saldhana was being deceived into thinking that the Queen and Prince Phillip were calling and had no understanding that in fact, it was a prank call.

Finally, the ethical breaches of trauma and wellbeing can be clearly displayed, through the mental stress that the call had on Ms Saldhana as it resulted in her being heavily traumatised. Her wellbeing was also immensely effected as she felt that suicide was her only escape from the trauma.

2014-12-01-nurseJaccintha-thumb

(Pictured, Jacintha Saldhana)

Industry code of conduct breaches:

The hoax call breached the Surveillance Devices Act 2007, under the section S11 which states the “prohibition on communication or publication of private conversation or recordings of activities.” The broadcasting also breached the Broadcasting Services At 1992 (cth) under section 8 (1)(g).

After the call was broadcasted:

In December of 2012 after the prank call was broadcasted to air, the Australia Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), notified the TodayFM radio station that they were conducting an investigation into the broadcasting of the prank call. In June of 2013, ACMA provided the radio station with a copy of the preliminary investigation report. This report included the beaches that had taken place. Soon after receiving the report, TodayFM, proceeded to take the case to the Federal court, seeing an injunction which would restrain ACMA from making statements that it(the prank call) had committed any criminal offenses. ACMA ruled that the station had breached by law, the broadcasting rule of airing the call without the consent of Ms Saldhana.

The court decision was made on 14th March 2014, with the federal court ruling in ACMA’s favour regarding their investigation report stating that TodayFM had breached the clause 8(1)(g) of the Broadcasting Services Act 1992(cth). On the 4th March 2015, the judgement of the court hearing rules that, “authority functions included suspension and cancellation of licenses taking enforcement actions under BSA.” (Broadcasting services act)

What did the 2DayFm radio hosts do wrong?

The implications made on the broadcast included falsifying themselves and lying to the nurse in order to gain classified information. Ms Greig and Mr Christian also aired the conversation without the consent or knowledge of Ms Saldhana. For individuals within the field of radio broadcasting this case had a severe impact as it could have ended in prank and hoax calls becoming illegal on air.

What can future radio hosts learn from this?

Individuals working within the broadcasting industry can learn from this case and the effects that small ‘pranks’ can have on innocent individuals lives. Although the call is not to blame for the suicide of Ms Saldhana, it displays the unexpected effect that tampering with peoples lives can have.

~Trajectories of convergence p1~ BCM112

This weeks lecture spoke of user empowerment, information access and networked participation. My youtube video gives an overall explanation of the topic of this week.

Social media has transformed from newspapers, which relayed information in a centralised way, spreading from one to many to now a new digital age where information can be streamed in a decentralised and distributed way. Meaning that anyone with a device can spread news and information in the click of a button, whether correct or not.

The internet and social media platforms are now becoming the main source for individuals news. This is because social media networks now have the power to spread information from many to many in an instant. The transformation from old news to new media has resulted in a change in audiences from the traditional passive audiences to a now exposure- oriented audience. (Audiences)

~ The beginning of the road~

“AND SO THE JOURNEY BEGINS”

Hi there,

My name is Paris and I’m currently a first year student studying media and communications at University. It’s a little daunting and confusing as I have no idea what I’m doing, but I think I’m getting the hang of it… I hope. I am excited to use this platform to write my perspective and opinions on issues of the world. I hope to write about anything and everything that inspires and motivates me. This could be anything from media, travel, food or even photography, so be prepared to read it all.

The photo of the road above was taken in the middle of no where… literally. It was shot on a stretch of road on the way to Windorah which is a country town in outback Queensland. There was no one in sight, just open road with the heat of the ground burning my feet as I quickly ran to take the photo. The feeling of being completely alone with no else in sight is one the most peaceful and frightening things. The silence in the air mixed with the hot breeze is something I crave and an aspect of travel that I love.

I have been to some of the most remote and extraordinary places and no two locations provide the same experience. There’s always something new to capture, to photograph, to explore, to taste and to experience. I love the feeling of going to a new place and exploring every inch, taking as many photos as possible.

So there’s a little about me and what this blog will be about, I hope you enjoy 🙂
